Sin Tierras vs Big Bucks

The small against the tall, animated by the presidency of Lugo, announcing change to Paraguay… Some 1500 peasants from the provinces have arrived in Asuncion, Paraguay, to demonstrate for Agrarian reform, resdistribution of land from the “latifundistas” towards the “sin tierras”, for a tax on soy, renunciation of the fiscal general de la nacion etc. They basically want their share.

Here some frames “on the way”:

Demonstration and meeting with the Minister of Interior, Rafael Filizzola, in Capiibari (Capi Ybari) on 01.11.08

Then the activists came from the provinces to the Plaza Italia, in Asuncion, over 1000 people stay there in makeshift shelters:

Yesterday, the demonstrators marched to the Fiscalia Nacional to demand the resignation of the Fiscal General whom they consider corrupt, friends with the Latifundistas and enemy of the peasants. The demonstration was violently (in my opinion, with clearly excessive force) dispersed by the police. People who were already running away or defenseless on the ground were beaten and kicked and rubber bullets were used at closest range. One demonstrator was hit at the head only 3 meters from the police line. It seems that the confrontation lead to some 50 wounded demonstrators (mostly superficial, but others had to be hospitalized) as well as wounded police personnel. I saw one police officer with a broken nose.

Today, even more demonstrators, this time also including some “sin techos” marched again, this time to the Plaza de congreso.

After a night in Menonite Filadelfia in the North of Paraguay (“Chaco”) y was ready to continue. It might be interesting to document the interaction of the Menonites with the indigenous groups, but this time it was just tourism. And there isn’t much to see, the Menonites here aren’t looking traditional, they are rather modern [...]
